What is Heartgard Plus? Heartgard Plus is a chewable tablet that contains Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate which are worming medications that help to prevent heartworm disease in dogs. This combination of worming medication is also effective in the treatment and control of hookworms and roundworms which are intestinal parasites. Heartgard Plus Chewables are formulated and approved for use on puppies 6 weeks of age and older and on breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs. .

How does Heartgard Plus work? When given monthly as directed, Heartgard Plus is effective in killing immature heartworms introduced to the dog within 30 days. This prevents the development of adult heartworms. The active ingredients (Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate) also work to kill roundworms and hookworms in the dog's intestinal tract.
How is Heartgard Plus administered? Heartgard Plus is most effective when given every 30 days and should be chewed. You may need to break the tablet into smaller pieces if your dog is a “gulper”. This medication should be given during mosquito season (spring/summer months) but most veterinarians recommend using it year-round. A heartworm test is necessary before starting this medication and may also be necessary before restarting Heartgard Plus. Check with your veterinarian regarding his/her recommendations.
