Uveitis Cat Eye Infection
Uveitis is a common eye infection for cats. Uveitis is an inflammation of a part of the eye called the uveal tract which includes the cat’s iris as well as other parts of the eye. Left untreated, uveitis can lead to blindness or even death, so it is important to take your cat to the vet right away if you suspect he may suffer from the disease.
Uveitis can strike without warning, and more often than not, you will never know for sure what caused it. However, some causes of uveitis include:
- Lymphoma
- Diffuse iris melanoma (DIM)
- Trauma
- Feline leukemia (FeLV)
- Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
- Toxoplasma gondii
- Feline herpes (FHV-1)
- Bartonella henselae
- Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)
Symptoms of Uveitis Cat Eye Infection
A cat with uveitis may exhibit a number of symptoms including:
- Red iris
- Mud-colored iris
- Red “whites” of the eye
- Indications of blindness
- Light sensitivity
- Squinting
- Cataracts
- “Cloudy” eyes
- Visible third eyelid
- Watering eyes
- Altered pupil shape
- Altered pupil size
- Eye enlargement (associated with glaucoma)
Treatment of Uveitis Cat Eye Infection
Unfortunately, uveitis is usually a chronic condition so if your cat is diagnosed with the disease, you will likely have to treat it for the rest of your cat’s life. Your vet may recommend a variety of treatments including:
Anti-inflammatory drugs such as Prednisone and BNP Triple Antibiotic Ointment with HC
Immune stimulant supplement such as Viralys L-Lysine powder or gel
Of course, if your vet can identify the cause of your cat’s uveitis, he or she will recommend the appropriate course of treatment for that as well.
