Dog Thyroid Problems
The thyroid gland uses the measured release of thyroid hormone to regulate the speed of many bodily processes. Thyroid problems occur when the rate of this release is disturbed. The most common thyroid issue in dogs is a decrease in the production and release of thyroid hormone known as hypothyroidism. Sometimes, this decrease is caused by a tumor growing on the thyroid or another part of the three-gland system to which it belongs (the pituitary and hypothalamus are the other two.) While hypothyroidism is most common in dogs, hyperthyroidism, an increase in thyroid hormone production, can also occur in very rare cases.
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism in Dogs
Since the thyroid gland regulates the speed of the body’s processes, a decrease in its function that occurs with hypothyroidism causes a general slowing of bodily functions. Typical symptoms are:
- Lethargy
- Weight gain
- Cold
- Dry skin
- Shedding
- Skin thickening and puffy eyes (rare)
Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism in Dogs
Hyperthyroidism in dogs is extremely rare and is much more common in cats. When hyperthyroidism does occur, this means that your dog is getting too much thyroid hormone. This excess hormone causes the metabolism to speed up, resulting in:
- Weight loss
- Increased appetite
- Faster heart rate
- Frequent urination
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Shortness of breath (in rare cases)
Breeds Susceptible to Thyroid Problem in Dog
Thyroid problems may occur more often in certain breeds of dog and this problem is more common in older dogs between the ages of four and ten. Susceptible breeds include:
- Golden retriever
- Great dane
- Beagle
- Shetland sheepdog
- American cocker spaniel
- Labrador retriever
- Rottweiler
- Boxer
- Doberman pinscher
- German shepherd
- Akita
- Old english sheepdog
- Irish setter

Treatment for hypothyroidism involves hormone replacement therapy. Treatment options for hyperthyroidism include medication, radioactive iodine treatment, and surgical removal of the diseased portion of the thyroid gland.
