Thrombocytosis
Thrombocytosis is caused by an elevated number of platelets in your dog’s blood. It can be a temporary condition caused by excitement, exercise, pregnancy, or birth. It can also result from an infection, blood loss, tissue damage, cancer, drugs, chemotherapy, or bone marrow disease. The condition can potentially cause blood clots or excessive bleeding if there is a concurrent platelet function defect.
Thrombocytosis Symptoms
While your dog may display no symptoms, it may experience:
- Enlarged spleen
- Bloody stool
- Distended abdomen
Thrombocytosis Treatment
While your veterinarian will conduct a blood test to determine platelet levels, high platelet levels may not be unusual in healthy dogs. Therefore, it is important that your vet conducts a full medical history and diagnostic work-up to ensure that the increased platelet count is not due to an underlying condition.
Thrombocytosis usually goes away when the underlying cause is treated.
