Dog Self-Biting

Dogs who frequently chew on their legs or feet may be suffering from a variety of problems, including mites, fleas, allergies, or even orthopedic injuries. There may also be a behavioral issue behind the biting. For example, your dog may be stressed, anxious, or simply bored.

Dog Self-Biting Symptoms

Your dog may actively chew on parts of his body that are easily accessible, including his feet, legs, and flank. Biting can cause irritated skin and open wounds, which will predispose your dog to infection.

Dog Self-Biting Treatment

Your veterinarian can determine if your dog’s biting is being caused by an external factor such as parasites, allergies, ligament or bone pain, or a foreign object. Depending on the underlying condition, the vet may prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication. If allergies are suspected, you may want to switch to a special diet like Breeder's Choice Pinnacle Allergy-Free Duck & Potato Dry Formula. Supplements such as Vetri-Science Antiox-10 and topical sprays like Vet's Best Natural Formula Flea Itch Relief can also reduce allergy suffering.

If your veterinarian cannot determine a physical cause behind your dog’s biting, you may want to consider behavioral therapy. Stressed, anxious, or bored dogs should receive plenty of exercise and play time to distract them from obsessive biting. Introducing new chew toys such as Petstages ORKA Jack Dog Chew Toy or bones may also help reduce self-biting. With your veterinarian’s recommendation, you may also want to try applying a bitter substance to your dog’s bite-prone areas such as NaturVet Bitter Yuck No Chew Spray.
