Pneumonia in Cats
Like humans, pneumonia in cats occurs when the lung tissue fills with fluid, characterized by difficulty in breathing. In essence, the fluid is taking space in the alveoli that should be occupied with air. Symptoms may initially be mild, but without treatment the disorder can become life-threatening to your cat. Pneumonia can originate from infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses.
Feline Pneumonia Symptoms
Symptoms include:
- Difficulty breathing, especially when inhaling. Breaths are shallow and weak
- Loss of appetite, including the lack of desire to take water which can lead to dehydration
- Fever
- Lethargy, weakness. Your cat may withdraw and not interact as it normally would
- Runny nose, watery eyes, and cough/wheezing
- Tongue and gums may be bluish in color
Feline Pneumonia Treatment
Antibiotics such as Amoxicillin and Enrofloxacin can be used for the treatment of bacterial infections that may cause feline pneumonia. It is important to note that it is necessary for the cat owner to complete the full cycle of prescribed antibiotics for their pet. Stopping antibiotic treatment prematurely can lead to incomplete healing and drug-resistant recurrences.
