Internal Medicine
Issues related to your dog’s health can often be seen on the surface, but in other cases the illness lies out of sight. Various cancers, parasites and hormonal disorders might cause visible symptoms, but the main damage they do is beneath the skin. Much the same is true of bacteria and viruses that are invisible to the naked eye, but cause infections that lead to systemic damage throughout your dog’s body. Internal medicine seeks to address these issues by creating more accurate diagnoses and treating dog diseases in a variety of new ways that include both invasive and noninvasive procedures.
Dog Diseases
Broadly speaking, dog diseases can be divided into those that are based either internally or externally. External illnesses include many allergies, fungal infections and diseases of the ears and eyes. Internal illnesses, on the other hand, involve the body’s actual processes and include cancer, diabetes and hormone imbalances. In addition, invasions by parasites and infections from various bacteria and viruses can also be considered internal illnesses since they go on below the surface.
Treatment of Diseases in Dogs
Recent advances in both medicinal and surgical procedures have opened up many new treatment options for dog diseases. Chemotherapy for canine cancer is just one example. Surgery is now much more common than it once was, especially in the area of dental health. Medications that treat not just the symptoms of dog diseases, but also their deeper causes are being developed all of the time. Today, if you take your dog to the veterinarian, everything from antibiotic to anti-inflammatory medications might be prescribed. In addition, vaccines and other preventative techniques are continuing to be developed to protect your dog’s health. In short, internal medicine is perhaps the fastest growing field of veterinary medicine in the United States.
