Cat Food Allergies

Just like people, cats can have food allergies. In fact, food is the third most common allergen for cats after fleas and inhaled allergens (atopy). Cats of any breed and any age can develop allergies to foods they have previously eaten without any problems, so it is important to watch for symptoms of food allergies, even if you haven’t changed your pet’s food.

Cat Food Allergies Symptoms

Symptoms of food allergies mimic the symptoms of other kinds of allergies and may include:

• Itchy skin and ears
• Hair loss
• Intense scratching
• Dermatitis

Your cat may be more likely to suffer from food allergies rather than other kinds of allergies if their allergies manifest in the winter, or if the allergies fail to dissipate after administration of steroids.

Cat Food Allergy Treatment

Despite our lack of understanding when it comes to food allergies causes, we do know how to treat them. Treatments may include:

• Food trials using products such as Hill’s Prescription d/d or Nature’s Balance Grain Free Limited Ingredient Green Pea and Salmon.
• “Limited antigen” or “hydrolyzed protein” diets of hypoallergenic foods such as Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline Hypoallergenic HP 23 or Hill’s Prescription z/d.

• Antihistamines such as Diphenhydramine
• Steroids such as Prednisone
