Cat
Fungal Pneumonia
Characterized by a fluid buildup in the cat’s lung tissue, pneumonia
in cats can be the result of:
- A fungal infection
- A viral infection
- A bacterial infection
- Aspiration
- Smoke inhalation
- System failure
- Trauma
Pneumonia, especially fungal pneumonia, can sometimes be a sign of
a more serious underlying condition such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus
(FIV), and must be taken very seriously. The fungus Cryptococcus neoformans
exists throughout the United States, and most animals who inhale it will
never have a problem. However, cats with immune problems may develop pneumonia
after inhaling the spores.

Fungal pneumonia, like pneumonia resulting from other causes, can result

- Lethargy
- Anorexia (reduced interest in food)
- Cyanosis (bluish tint to the cat’s lips, tongue, and gums)

fungus) include:

- Skin lesions
- Eye problems
- Nasal masses
