Canine Histoplasmosis
Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease transmitted to dogs through eating or inhaling infected soil. The fungus is common in the southern and central United States.
Histoplasmosis Symptoms
Many dogs with histoplasmosis in their lungs do not develop symptoms although the infection is present. If histoplasmosis spreads to other organs in the body, the condition can become more dangerous. Symptoms to look for include:
- Diarrhea
- Depression
- Fever
- Severe weight loss
- Poor appetite
- Anemia
- Difficulty breathing/Cough
- Enlarged spleen, liver, and/or lymph nodes
- Lameness
- Skin problems
- Eye disease
Histoplasmosis Treatment
If you suspect histoplasmosis, your veterinarian will run tests on your dog’s blood, stool, and/or urine, and perform x-rays and biopsies, to make a diagnosis.
Histoplasmosis can be treated with antifungal drugs such as Ketoconazole; secondary bacterial infections will be treated with antibiotics such as Baytril.
Good nutrition, like Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline and Canine Recovery RS Formula Canned Food, is always important if you have a dog recovering from histoplasmosis.
