Canine Anxiety

Experts say that 30 percent of dogs suffer from canine anxiety, and it may be on the rise. But why? In a world with organic treats and a push for healthy living, the truth is people are still busy—spending their days working. Dogs are waiting, getting lonely, and not receiving quality exercise time. There is also a widespread problem of huge breeding operations that have little mind for the well being of puppies. Breeders go for look instead of temperament and what’s left is nervous and neurotic dogs.

Canine Anxiety Symptoms

Canine anxiety symptoms look much like those from separation anxiety. Dogs will panic and become destructive. Don’t misinterpret these signs as a dog just being “bad.”

  • Excessive licking (himself or furniture)
  • Heavy panting or drooling
  • Chasing his tail
  • Pacing
  • Whining
  • Salivating
  • Barking
  • Howling
  • Scratching
  • Chewing
  • Digging
  • Fence running
  • Destroying surroundings or harming self

Canine Anxiety Treatment

Training your dog to face his fear and then form positive associations with what scared him in the first place is the healthiest, long-term form of treatment. For separation anxiety, find the triggers that make your dog anxious, whether it’s picking up your car keys before heading out the door or putting on your coat. Try to change your behavior to make your dog at ease. It may take up to 2 to 6 months for your dog to get over separation anxiety. Combine training with natural remedies, which can be found at National Pet Pharmacy: Happy Tails Spa Sleepytime Herbal Dog Elixir and Nutri-Vet Pet-Ease Pheromone Plus Spray for Dogs. For a severe case of separation anxiety, your veterinarian might suggest a prescription anti-anxiety medication such as FDA-approved Clomicalm or Reconcile (much like human anti-anxiety medications).
