What is Heartgard Plus? Heartgard Plus is a combination heartworm preventative (Ivermectin) and intestinal wormer (Pyrantel pamoate) that is administered by mouth once a month. Heartgard Plus Chewable Tablets are formulated for dogs and puppies over 6 weeks of age. This medication is also safe for pregnant/breeding females.

It also treats and controls roundworm and hookworms which can cause disease in both pets and people. The delicious beef flavor makes Heartgard Plus easy to administer.
How does Heartgard Plus work? Heartgard Plus is used to prevent heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection, which is transmitted by a mosquito. It also controls and treats hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, A. brasiliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala) and roundworms (ascarids - Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina). It contains two active ingredients. Ivermectin interferes with the parasite's nerve transmission, causing paralysis and death of the immature heartworms (larvae). Pyrantel pamoate also interferes with the parasite's nerve transmission, causing paralysis and death of intestinal worms.
How is Heartgard Plus administered? Heartgard Plus is administered by mouth once a month. Most veterinarians recommend giving this medication year-round but you should check with your veterinarian regarding his/her recommendation. A heartworm test is necessary before starting this medication and may also be necessary before restarting Heartgard Plus so you should check with your veterinarian if you have skipped more than one monthly dose. Do not give two doses at one time if a dose has been missed. The chewable should be administered in a manner that encourages the dog to chew, rather than to swallow without chewing.
What results can I expect? Heartgard Plus will kill immature heartworms dogs were exposed to in the preceding month. It will also treat and prevent intestinal infection with adult hookworms and roundworms.
